News from the Reunion Committee

61-Year Reunion?
As most classmates know, the Reunion Committee was in the process of planning a reunionto celebrate, in 2020, the 60 year anniversary of our graduation.  60 years, can you believe it!!??  As most also know, planning was completely derailed by the terrible Covid 19 pandemic, and we promised to restart it when things looked better.  So, we recently queried those of you we have email addresses for, about whether we should have the reunion this October or early Novemver.  Responses were overwhelmingly in favor, indicating that we might have 110-120 attendees, counting spouses/others.  The majority preferred [1] a luncheon rather than dinner, for a more casual event and/or to avoid night driving, and [2] a more central location than Scottsdale, for less driving altogether, as the many classmates still (or again) in the Phx area are scattered from Gilbert to Surprise.

WE NOW HAVE A DATE, TIME, AND VENUE: October 30, 2021, 11:30 to 2:30, Hilton Embassy Suites Biltmore Phoenix, 2630 E Camelback Rd.  This hotel has fairly easy access as it's only a mile from the Squaw Peak Freeway (51), and this also makes it easy from the airport.

WE'LL HAVE A BUFFET with a huge assortment of foods, for $28 per person.  Although this may sound high for a lunch, in our experience this particular buffet would have cost us easily twice as much in the evening.  It'll have some fairly fancy items, and we think sufficient items for 'vegetarians' and even vegans.  I'll get the list copied into my next communication, when I've put together a registration form for inclusion.  There will be a cash bar, not inside the room but very close outside the room.

THE HOTEL HAS RESERVED A BLOCK OF 10 ROOMS, for our 'travellers' who wish to stay onsite, at $159.00 per night plus sales and lodging taxes, for one or two persons.  We have no obligation for these, and will understand if you wish to stay somewhere less expensive.  The price includes cooked to order breakfasts, 2 Hour evening receptions, Wi-Fi, overnight parking, and a hotel shuttle which is complimentary if within a 3 mile radius (probably excluding airport) or discounted otherwise.  Rooms must be reserved by October 1 or might be released.  Make reservations 24/7 at 800-HILTONS.  Request the group rate for "Camelback HS 60th Reunion" or reference the group code "060."  OK, I know, it's really a 61 year reunion now.  😉

A BIG THANK YOU TO KATHY (MANNING) DUFRAIN AND DON YEAGER for arranging all of this.  They're in Phx, while Sharon and I are in Prescott.  They did look into some other venues that might have met our criteria, and this one was the clear choice.

I HAVE OF COURSE HEARD FROM SOME CLASSMATES ABOUT COVID concerns, but only a very few indicated that they would not come if the contagion rate had not subsided, and there's still some time for that to happen.  Those few probably have some underlying medical conditions which they feel put them at high risk.  We understand that, but most are telling us we really need to have this reunion now, as we're losing classmates to non-Covid causes at an ever-accelerating rate.  Nationwide statistics I heard earlier in Covid's Delta Variant surge indicated that 99% of Covid deaths and 97% of Covid hospitalizations occurring then were of people not fully vaccinated.  Fully vaccinated people getting Covid then were getting much milder cases.  I'm guessing that most of our classmates are now fully vaccinated.  There's still time to get that done, and vaccination rates are indeed now rising again.  Per statistics cited above, unvaccinated attendees will be at higher risk, but might wish to take that risk.  One important mitigating factor is that, even though we can't practicably wear masks while indulging in luxurious food & drink, we will have a huge room in which to spread out.  Its capacity is 150, almost as many as the attendees we had at the big 50th, and we likely won't come close to that this time.  We could even have them set up more tables, fewer people per table, and can make that decision at the last minute according to current circumstances.

STAY TUNED FOR A REGISTRATION FORM by email soon if we have your email address.  We'll then snailmail it to classmates for which we have no email addresses.  We'll need to have all registration forms in hand, with checks, two weeks before the event.
